Rep. Celeste Maloy, U.S. Representative for Utah’s 2nd congressional district, recently posted a series of reflections and tributes on her social media account. The posts addressed both the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and the passing of Congressman Doug LaMalfa.

On January 3, 2026, Rep. Maloy wrote about the approaching milestone in American history: “As we head into the 250th anniversary of our country’s founding, what we can we do to honor the legacy that was given to us in 1776? I share my thoughts in this week’s update.”

A few days later, on January 6, 2026, she expressed her condolences following the death of Congressman Doug LaMalfa: “I’m heartbroken by the loss of Congressman Doug LaMalfa. After I was elected, he was one of the very first to befriend me as we worked together on the Western Caucus. We bonded over our outdated, cracked iPhones and often shared charging blocks to make it through the day.” In a subsequent post on the same day, she added: “Doug was one of the friendliest, most genuine people I’ve had the privilege of serving with, and his constant jokes and nicknames for everyone will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

The United States will mark its semiquincentennial—250 years since its Declaration of Independence—in July 2026. The occasion is expected to prompt nationwide reflection on American history and values.

Congressman Doug LaMalfa represented California’s 1st congressional district until his recent passing. He was known for his work on agricultural issues and active participation in groups such as the Congressional Western Caucus.
