Todd Weiler, a Utah State Senator, posted a series of tweets on April 5, 2026, covering topics ranging from fast food choices at rallies to historical accounts involving Elder Dieter Uchtdorf and his family.
In one tweet, Weiler posed a question to his followers: “Ever ask yourself what’s the best fast food to bring to a No Kings rally?” (April 5, 2026).
Later that day, Weiler shared an account from December 1973: “In December 1973, when five terrorists hijacked a Lufthansa 737 in Rome — leaving 32 people dead — Elder Uchtdorf was ordered to follow the plane and negotiate for the release of the pilots and hostages. The mission was successfully accomplished. #Churchofjesuschrist” (April 5, 2026).
Weiler also recounted details from Elder Uchtdorf’s early life: “When Dieter was 11, his father’s political beliefs earned him the label of a Soviet ‘dissenter,’ putting the family in danger. His sisters escaped by jumping from a moving train while he and his mother climbed a mountain to avoid guard checkpoints.” (April 5, 2026).
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf is a prominent leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has previously served as an airline executive and pilot. In December 1973, Lufthansa Flight 303 was hijacked in Rome by Palestinian militants; negotiations led to the eventual release of hostages after several days. These events occurred during a period marked by frequent international hijackings tied to geopolitical conflicts.
Weiler serves as an elected official representing Utah in the state senate.
